Title: Study of innovative technologies for the transition of the metallurgical industry towards a circular economy based on the recovery of by-products of the production process itself and its decarbonization through the use of renewable raw materials.
Acronym: HYMET
Description/Objective: The HYMET project was born with the aim of studying new technologies applicable in the metallurgical industry, more specifically the steel industry, for the revaluation of by-products of the process itself and decarbonisation through the use of renewable raw materials, such as hydrogen. This project pursues the development of innovative technologies capable of recovering the main by-product generated during the steelmaking process (iron oxide scale) through the use of energy from renewable sources. That is why in the present project different ways of studying are proposed for the generation of green hydrogen through innovative electrolysis systems for its subsequent use as a reducing agent in a new process specifically designed for the reduction of scale to metallic iron, a product that It can be used as raw material for the process itself, improving the sustainability of the process and minimizing the generation of waste. Finally, the study of CO2 capture from the emissions of the process for the generation of CO thanks to a co-electrolysis system has been proposed based on the results obtained from the study of the different SOEC technologies (Co-SOEC).
Specifically, ARIEMA will design and build a hydrogen production system of up to 2kW based on AEM (anion exchange membrane) technology. It is an innovative hydrogen production technology that combines the advantages of the two most widely used electrolysis methods today, alkaline electrolysis and PEM (polymer exchange membranes). AEM electrolysis achieves high efficiencies without using noble metals and with much lower KOH solution concentrations than traditional alkaline electrolysis, reducing the cost of materials and improving operating conditions.
